A great gift idea or just to treat yourself, learn how to make our chai tea mix with a range of delicious spices.
Equipment
- Hotplate
- Frypan
- Spoon
- Mortar and pestle or blender
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup black looseleaf tea (English Breakfast or Ceylon tea is great)
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 12 cardamom pods
- 12 black peppercorns
- 24 whole cloves
- 4 star anise
- 2 cinnamon sticks
Heat saucepan over low heat. Add everything except the tea and ground ginger to the pan. Heat to ‘toast’ the spices, stirring regularly. When they spices start to smell toasty and release a little bit of oil, turn off the heat and cool.
Put the cooled spices into a mortar and pestle or a blender/spice grinder and crush or blend to a very rough grind (chunky bits are good, you don’t want it to be too finely ground).
Mix in the tea and ground ginger. Place into bags or jars.
